The doctor did not take long to finish with Mr Beach’s body. When he came back to the issue hall, Mr Thackeray was quick to divert him to the office where Mr Carlyle and Mr Hunter were trying to keep the two publishers calm.

The doctor was diverted so quickly, he did not have time to report his findings to Mr Whicher before his medical skills were being called upon again.

Mr Thackeray made sure to quietly mention this fact to Mr Hunter, which gave Alexander the opportunity to surreptitiously question the doctor whilst he examined Mr Chapman and Mr Hall.

Lady Sarah decided to go enlist the help of Sylvia, the Baker boys and Mr Dickens in recalling the scattered novelists from the far corners of the library. She was not searching for the writers because Mr Whicher had rudely ordered her to, but because she had a unsettled feeling that she could not shake.

There was nothing she could point to as evidence to support her misgivings, but the fear that something terrible was about to happen remained.

Sylvia and Mr Dickens were in the next room, and readily agreed to help. Lady Sarah had thought of asking Mr Hunter to assist them as well, but he was needed to keep Mr Chapman and Mr Hall calm and confined for the moment.

Lee and Stanley were a little harder to find. The pair were incredibly good at hiding when they wanted to, and had a great deal of practice avoiding Mrs Bosworth, and Cooky, at Grangeback Manor.

After following Mr Whicher and then listening outside the door whilst he attempted to interview Mr Thackeray, the two boys had become bored and decided to hide between the book shelves and see how long they could hide before the other found them.

It took nearly ten minutes of searching for Lady Sarah to locate Stanley, who had hidden from Lee. Upon hearing people approaching, Lee had also hidden and was debating trying to slip past them whilst avoiding detection or staying put until they left and then continuing his game with his brother.

It took a further ten minutes for Lee to be located. Lady Sarah suspected that the late hour, combined with being locked in the library after a murder, was causing the two boys to become quite manic in their behaviour, but the moment they were both found and given a task to accomplish, they focused entirely on that and nothing else.

Though they were still young in age, they had matured quite a lot since coming to live at Grangeback Manor. It would not be long before they would need to make a decision about their futures.

They clearly wished to be mystery solvers, like Lady Sarah, but that was not something boys without means could accomplish. They would need a proper education and Lady Sarah was resolved that as soon as she was married, she would find the boys a tutor and look at how best to formalise their education.

For now though, their education would have to wait, especially if they were to find out what happened to Daniel Beach.
